What is Experiential Learning?
Experiential learning is a way of learning by doing. You take what you learn in class and use it to solve real-world problems or work on projects. This can include internships, research, creative projects, or hands-on training. This hands-on approach helps you gain practical knowledge and skills to use in the workplace.
Experiential Learning Opportunities at FLCC
Experiential learning can look different depending on your program. At FLCC, we offer a wide variety of hands-on learning opportunities to fit your interests and career goals.
Internship (Credit-Bearing or Non-Credit)
An internship is a supervised work experience, usually short-term, where you learn on the job in a field related to your major or interests. Internships can be full-time or part-time, paid or unpaid, and may earn you academic credit. They let you integrate classroom knowledge with practical application and build professional skills in a real community or industry setting.
Cooperative Education
Cooperative education alternates classroom learning and productive paid work experiences in a field related to a student's academic and career goals. Co-ops are formal partnerships between an educational institution, an employer, and one or more students. They provide meaningful work experiences for students. Co-ops are off-campus and either full-time or part-time.
Clinical Placement
Students in clinical placements rotate through various health care agencies with faculty supervision. These learning opportunities focus on the healthcare field and reflect the careers our graduates work in after earning their degree. Emphasis is on mastering theoretical concepts, improving skill competency, and developing clinical reasoning skills with a focus on evidence-based practice.
Field Study
Field study involves collecting data outside of an experimental or lab setting. This type of work is often conducted in natural settings or environments and can be designed differently depending on the discipline. It may be mentored, self-directed, or part of a full course. Projects include inquiry, design, investigation, discovery, and application.
Practicum
A practicum is a period of hands-on experience gained in academic, professional, or community settings or organizations as part of a course. This experience focuses on applying and practicing theoretical, technical, and cultural skills relevant to the course or profession.
