Aquatic Ecosystem Discovery

Swamp Channel Paddle

Travel by canoe to explore wetland plants and animal signs. Muller educators will discuss how the wetlands support biodiversity and benefit the local watershed. We'll examine how adaptations allow certain animals to live in this distinct environment.

Pond Ecology: Macroinvertebrates

Get a close look at what is living in Muller Pond using hand lenses, field guides, and microscopes. Explore the diversity of macroinvertebrates and aquatic plants and discuss how they relate to the food web, water quality, and ecosystem health.

Wildlife Exploration

Camera Trap Biodiversity

Discover how to use pictures to observe animal signs and behaviors. Learn about trail camera placement and what evidence can be extracted using trail cameras. Compare images from multiple locations and predict what you'll see.

Migration Explorers

Journey along migratory pathways, just like the birds, to understand the routes birds take to reach their winter homes and summer breeding areas. Learn about the vital resources birds need to make this long trek and the obstacles they face in flight and on land.

Classroom Visit Programs

Project FeederWatch

Participate in Cornell's interactive Project FeederWatch. Learn about a variety of fascinating birds that visit feeders, explore their life histories, and practice identifying them through careful observation.

Macroinvertebrates

Get a close look at what might be living in nearby aquatic systems. Discuss how macroinvertebrates and aquatic plants relate to the food web, water quality, and ecosystem health.

Nature Journaling

Muller Field Station is the perfect place to practice mindful observation. Nature journaling is a great way to settle the mind, spark curiosity, and explore the senses. Record the sights, sounds, smells, and feelings that you find in nature.

Birding

Grab the binoculars for a chance to learn about the birds at Muller Field Station year-round. From bird calls to silhouettes to habitat locations, students will learn identification skills for local birds in the Finger Lakes region. Students will also learn the importance of birding and birding surveys to monitor the health of bird populations and their relationship to the environment.
