FLX AI Hub programming looks wide, digs deep

This fall’s artificial intelligence series offers a variety of topics with webinar overviews and in-depth workshops.

FLCC’s community programming on artificial intelligence topics resumes the day after Labor Day, Sept. 8, with a lunchtime webinar on one of the downsides of AI: “workslop,” a reference to content that looks good but lacks meaning.

Webinars let you explore a topic with a relatively minor time commitment. For those ready to dig deeper into specialized topics, the FLX AI Hub at FLCC offers a series of three-hour in-person workshops.

The College holds a free lunchtime webinar on the second Tuesday of the month, offering demonstrations and practical tips with AI tools. Registration is required to get the webinar link via email.

• Sept. 8: AI ‘Workslop’ Prevention: Keeping AI-Generated Work Actually Useful

“Workslop” is AI-generated content that looks polished but lacks real substance. In this webinar, you'll learn to spot workslop before it spreads, and pick up practical habits for using AI to produce work that's effective, not just efficient.

• Oct. 13: AI as Thought Partner: Beyond the Vending Machine

AI is everywhere, but asking it for quick answers is not the same as using it as a true thought partner. In this interactive 60-minute webinar, participants will learn how to move beyond one-shot prompting and use AI to clarify ideas, ask better questions, anticipate obstacles, explore options, and use AI to expand your thinking.

Participants will be introduced to practical ways to use AI as a mirror, coach, and strategist, along with simple rules of engagement and real-life examples. The session will also touch on using different tools such as NotebookLM, Scribe, Gems, and custom GPTs.

This webinar is for beginners, occasional users, and regular AI users who want to move beyond basic prompting and get more strategic value from AI. No technical background is required.

• Nov. 10: AI Video Creation: Turn Ideas into Video, No Editing Skills Required

AI tools can now generate, edit, and animate video from little more than a text prompt or a script. In this webinar, you'll see these tools in action and learn how to go from an idea to a finished video clip with no camera or editing experience needed.

• Dec. 8: AI-Powered Infographics: Turn Data and Ideas into Visuals in Minutes

You don't need Photoshop skills or a design background to create polished, professional-looking infographics. In this 35-minute session, you'll learn how to use AI tools to turn raw data, lists, or ideas into clear, eye-catching visuals that are ready to share in a presentation, report, or social post.

In-Person Workshops

For those looking for an opportunity to tackle an AI project in-depth with the help of an instructor, the College offers a series of three-hour in-person workshops from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays, starting Oct. 2. Registration is required. The cost is $99 per workshop or all five for $399.

• Oct. 2: Vibe Coding: Build an App by Just Describing It

No coding experience needed. Learn "vibe coding" - using AI to turn your plain-English ideas into working software. In 3 hours, you'll go from an idea to a real, working app, no coding required. No paid plan required.

• Oct. 23: The Neuroaccessible Environment: Using AI to Design for Sensory, Executive Function, and Communication Diversity

Our workplaces and classrooms are usually built around the needs of an "average" or "normal" person - something that doesn't really exist! AI tools now make it possible (even easy!) to design for a much wider range of minds, right from the start. This hands-on workshop is for educators and business professionals interested in creating environments where neurodivergent students, employees, and customers feel welcome. We'll work with AI tools to rewrite dense communications, generate multiple format options, support executive functioning with scaffolded steps, and identify potential sources of sensory or cognitive overload. Participants will leave with increased understanding of neuroaccessibility as well as a library of prompts to help us create a world with fewer barriers!

• Nov. 6: From AI Curiosity to AI Adoption: A Practical Workshop on Use Cases, Pilots, and the Human Side of Change

AI is everywhere, but using AI a few times a week is not the same as adopting it across a team or organization.

In this interactive three-hour workshop, participants will learn how to identify practical AI use cases, evaluate pilot ideas, and move from experimentation to more sustainable adoption. The session will include practical frameworks such as ADKAR, Stanford’s Human Agency Scale, pilot prioritization criteria, and the BELONGING framework for supporting people through change.

This workshop is appropriate for people who are new to AI, experimenting with AI a few times a week, or leading teams through AI-related change. No technical background is required.

Participants will leave with a workbook and clearer next steps for using AI in ways that are useful, responsible, and human-centered.

• Dec. 4: Run Your Own AI: A Hands-On Local LLM Workshop

Private AI that runs on hardware you already own, with no subscription and no internet required. We'll start on your phone, then move to your laptop, where you'll spend most of the afternoon actually putting it to work. Bring a phone and a laptop. Nothing to install beforehand, no coding involved, and curious beginners genuinely welcome.

• Jan. 8: Claude Cowork: Get Everyday Work Done by Just Asking

No technical skills needed. Cowork is an AI teammate that can research, write, organize files, and complete real tasks for you. Just describe what you need in plain English. In this hands-on session, you'll put it to work on daily tasks. Claude Pro subscription required.
