The new credential is for those who want to be part of the wine industry but not wine production.

The state Education Department has approved a new FLCC wine service management certificate for those pursuing careers related to wine sales and service.

Jamie Rotter, associate professor of culinary arts, developed the program to fill a niche in the food and wine industry.

“The program addresses a need in the industry in terms of service and marketing. Many think there is a direct link between hospitality and viticulture —that is not necessarily true. Viticulture produces a product, and hospitality sells that product, often paired with other products, such as dining and lodging. There is a gap there, and this program bridges that gap,” Rotter explained.

“There are folks who would like to have a career in the wine world, but do not want to be a part of the extremely technical production side. They would prefer to be involved in sales and service of those products,” he added.

Students will learn from industry experts and complete 300 hours of work experience at a hospitality business. Graduates will be qualified to work as a wine steward, food and beverage manager, wine marketer, and similar positions.

Most of the wine service management certificate can be taken online.

The 27-credit certificate includes courses in marketing, business law, culinary and beverage fundamentals, and three courses on wines. Courses can be completed full-time in one year or over a longer period on a part-time schedule.

Credits earned for the wine service management certificate can be applied later toward FLCC associate degrees in culinary arts or event and hospitality management.
