Geoff Astles, an FLCC trustee, was one of four trustees to receive the Donald M. Mawhinney Jr., Trustee Leadership Award at the New York Community College Trustees’ 71st Annual Conference in September.

Astles, of Farmington, who joined the Board of Trustees in January 2016, served as the Ontario County administrator from 1999 until his retirement in 2011.

Our college, our community, and our students have truly been the benefactors of his service and leadership," said Donald Cass, chair of the FLCC Board of Trustees.

His fellow board members nominated him for his leadership in advancing $50 million in campus capital projects that have significantly enhanced student opportunities and community engagement.

He was also the lead facilitator guiding the development and construction of the Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center in collaboration with the county, the college and the friends of CMAC.

His strategic insight during the pandemic enabled the college to secure over $1 million in new county funding, while his service on regional boards extended FLCC’s reach. Astles’ dedication to collaboration, innovation, and public service has contributed to FLCC becoming a stronger, more resilient institution.

The Donald M. Mawhinney Jr., Trustee Leadership Award celebrates trustees who demonstrate a significant commitment to the community college mission through exceptional leadership, inspired vision, and outstanding professional contributions to the goals and accomplishments of their local campus. Past recipients of this award from FLCC include former trustees Santa Abraham and Charles McCausland.
