The Voyage of Christopher Columbus: from Genoa to Washington, D.C

Author and Historian Matthew Restall will give an online talk on "The Voyage of Christopher Columbus: from Genoa to Washington, D.C.” on Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 7 to 8 p.m.

He will discuss his latest book, “The Nine Lives of Christopher Columbus” (Norton, 2025).

Matthew is the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Colonial Latin American History, Anthropology, and Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies at Penn State College of the Liberal Arts. He is also director of Latin American Studies.

“The Nine Lives of Christopher Columbus,” presents a new, authoritative biography of Columbus, while at the same time tracing his many afterlives down to the present time. The author explores the mysteries, many of them manufactured, that color how Columbus is understood. He shows how Columbus became an iconic American hero in the nineteenth century, and how a parallel hero emerged in the form of the Italian American Columbus.
