A student entering the Paralegal Program must register for Introduction to Legal Practice (Plg. 100) and Legal Research & Writing I (Plg.125) before he or she can register for any other law courses.  If a student insists on registering for additional law courses please contact the Paralegal Program coordinator to determine the student’s ability to take such additional classes.  However, the student should first be strongly discouraged from this.

Legal Research & Writing II (PLG 225)

Students wanting to take more than the suggested law courses upon entering the program.

A student who attempts to deviate from the above suggested law course load generally becomes overwhelmed in a short time frame.  The consequences of which is the tendency to perform poorly in all law courses.  However, there may be situations in which a student does not have any other courses to take other than law courses, in those situations, the registering student should contact the Paralegal Program coordinator to determine the best course of action in the program.

Office Communications

Paralegal Students must take Office Communications as a requirement for their degree; Business Communications does not satisfy this requirement and cannot be substituted.

New Paralegal Requirement:

The Paralegal Advisory Board has strongly suggested that the Paralegal students increase their competency in keyboarding.  Based on their recommendation, and in consultation with faculty, the following is proposed:

  • All paralegal students must exhibit a minimum competency of 35 words per minute via a standardized test given at regular intervals during the calendar year (or successfully complete OFT 100 and 131).
  • If a student passes the competency test, he or she will then receive a notation in colleague stating that “the Paralegal Program keyboarding competency has been met.”
  • If a student is not able to meet the minimum requirement of 35 words per minute via the test, he or she will be required to use the 2 general elective credit hours available in the Paralegal Program towards Oft. 100 Computer Keyboarding (1 credit hour) and Oft. 131 Keyboarding Improvement (1 credit hour).  Upon successful completion of both courses, the student will meet the  “Paralegal Program keyboarding competency.”
  • If a student elects to take the courses without taking the competency test, he or she may be able to do so.  Upon successful completion of Oft. 100 & Oft.131, the student will meet the “Paralegal Program keyboarding competency.”
